Are Dentures In your Future?

Losing teeth is one of the factors that affects a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Aside from that, it also affects them physically, like eating and speaking. Many patients seek your help so that they can enjoy the things they used to do when they had their pearly white teeth.

Dentures are the most common solution to missing teeth. These are very convenient as it can be taken in and out of the mouth. Dentures are very important, and as your experts in GCS Dental Lab, we assure that we provide you the most comfortable and most natural looking dentures here in Louisville, Kentucky.

What are dentures and how does it work?

Dentures are the most common replacements for missing teeth. Unlike other teeth replacement, dentures can be taken in and out of the mouth. From the impressions done in a patient’s mouth, the dentures are custom-made in our laboratory.

Dentures have a flesh-colored acrylic base that perfectly fits over your gums. The upper denture’s base covers the roof of the gums (palate). Then, the lower denture’s base is shaped like a horseshoe to make room for the tongue.

What denture is the best?

Basically, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to that question. Dentures should be made based on the diagnosis you have on your patient’s situation or based on the treatment they need. Here are the following types of dentures you can recommend to patients:

Immediate Denture is a complete or partial denture that is immediately inserted on the same day. While it offers immediate results, this type of denture should be relined after several months. The reason is bones that support natural teeth reshape as it heals. This causes the dentures to become loose.

Conventional Denture is placed after the remaining teeth in the mouth are removed and the tissues have fully healed. Healing usually takes several months. So, it might take a while before your patients can wear them.

Partial Denture rests on a metal framework that is attached to the patient’s natural teeth. In some cases, artificial crowns are placed over the natural ones to serve as anchors for the denture.

What are dentures made of?

In the past years, dentures have been made out of different sorts of things. Ranging from lead, cow teeth, elephant ivory, or teeth from a deceased person. Of course, dentures are now made differently due to the advancements in technology.

Now, the teeth in a denture are made from porcelain and acrylic resin.  Porcelain teeth look like and feel like natural teeth. The processes porcelain teeth undergo makes the denture harder and last longer. On the other hand, acrylic resin is now the go-to material for denture teeth because it’s cheaper and more lightweight. It also sticks more securely to the denture’s base and is easier to adjust compared to porcelain.

A denture needs a framework or plate to support the teeth. Usually, these are made from acrylic resin or it can be molded from a chrome cobalt metal. Acrylic resin plates are good for dentures that need an artificial gum line. It can also be colored to match the patient’s natural gum color. However, metal plates provide a better fit. It is also much stronger and lessens the risk of a denture from breaking.
